* All athletes must have a passing grade during the previous spring semester to try out. If an athlete has a failing
grade, they must take summer school to attain a passing grade in order to become eligible. If a player
has a failing grade during the season, it is the coaches discretion as to when the player regains eligibility. Players
must show they are responsible and have the ability to manage their time in regards to practice, match participation, and academics.
* The athletic schedule for the state is determined by the AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association - www.aiaonline.org). Therefore, tryouts/practices cannot begin before the date set by the AIA. This
date is the first Monday of the sixth week, with the calander year starting on July 1.
* The
coach will detemine the number of golfers for the team. Traditionally, it has been 10 -12 golfers. The number
of returning players from the previous year will determine how many spots are available for the current year.
*
Tryouts are nine holes of golf each day, held over a 5 day period, and at various courses. Cuts are done on a
daily basis.
* Practice is Monday-Friday beginning at 3:15pm. The team practices at a rotation of courses. Golfers
that are not participating in a match, must still attend practice. Golf is an off campus sport, so it is the golfers
responsibility to get to practice.
* Potential team members are strongly encouraged to play in summer tournaments
to get ready for tryouts, and for the match schedule, should they make the team. Returning players may become
exempt from tryouts. This is determined on how they performed during their previous year on the team, as well as, their
tournament schedule and scores during the off season. Always check with the coaches in regards to this, and keep the coaches
up-to-date via email in regards to your off-season tournament schedule and scores.
* 4-5 golfers
go to each match/tournament. The traveling squad is determined by their scores during practice rounds and by previous match
scores. Matches during the week are 9-hole rounds. Weekend matches/tournaments, Regionals and State are 18-hole rounds.
Coaches keep a running scoring average for each golfer. The golfers have access to these numbers at any time, they need to ask
the coaches what their numbers are.
* Please be aware that the squad traveling will miss 6th hour, and potentially
part, if not all, of 5th hour depending on match location. Also note that the teams have weekend tournaments. Once
a player has been assigned a match/tournament, they are expected to play.
* All team members are expected to participate
in, and help with, the annual fundraiser. More information about the fundraiser is discussed at the booster/parent
meeting after the team's have been announced.
* For golfers who are just getting started, the JGAA and the PGA
Southwest Section tours are great starting places to get tournament experience. For golfers who are
looking forward to college golf, there are many national junior tours that are closely followed by college coaches. The AJGA, FCWT, IJGT to name a few. College coaches also watch the rankings on the Golfweek Junior Extra (www.golfweek.com/juniorgolf/)
and the NJGS (National Junior Golf Scoreboard - www.njgs.com). These sites have much more information about the
many different national junior tours. Don't forget to register your athlete with the NCAA Clearinghouse if you are
planning on athletic scholarships. www.ncaaclearinghouse.net
* There are a number of tournaments held by the
FCWT, the AGA, and the USGA during the high school golf season. If your golfer is participating in any
of these tournaments that may conflict with the match schedule, or if your golfer is going to be out-of-town during the
high school golf season, they must let the coaches know as soon as possible so that the coaches are able to plan accordingly
for the matches.
* If you have any questions
that are not addressed here, please email the coaches or any of the booster officers.
